U.S. 50
The Forgotten Hiway

From Washington To St. Louis
A Sentimental Journey
One of the author's earliest memories is a visit
to a U.S. 50 work site in the mid-1930s when horse
drawn scoops guided by depression-weary men were
moving dirt to form the road bed.
A few years later he traveled on vacation with
his family from his southern Indiana home east to
Washington. It was 1940, a time of tourist cabins, road
houses, small cafes and filling stations with attendants
who cleaned windshields and checked the oil.
A decade later, the road was his route home
on leave from a U.S. Army base. And over the years
he continued to traverse sections of the road, which
Time Magazine call '"The Backbone of America."
Join the author now on a sentimental journey
along U.S. 50 from Washington to St. Louis as he
remembers the past and records the present. The result
is a fascinating look at a road and its people, a view
those who travel interstates miss in their haste to rush
from one place to another
Indiana General Stores

Take the ultimate road trip with the ultimate road-trip master, Wendell
Trogdon as he travels the highways and byways of the Hoosier State in search of a
disapearing species, The General Store.
From Abington to Yedda, from Zanesville to Laconia, Wendell finds the
stores that served as your grandparents' supermarkets.
What some general store operators say..."We
may not make a lot of money, but we enjoy it." "The store has been good
for us and for our family. We hope to keep it open for the community."
"The Wal-Marts of the world have about put stores like this out of business."
"It (the store) is a way to preserve a bit of history that has come and
gone."
And some comments from customers:"I don't
know waht we'd do without this store. We need a place to meet and talk."
It will be hard on us fellas if it closes."
Borderline Indiana

Indiana is a state of contrasts with
endless differences in its terrain, its resources, its history and its people. It is
its variations, shaply defined, that create its mystique and add to its charm.
Majestic cliffs overlook the Ohio.
Rolling hills flatten into endless fields that reach to the horizon. Sand dunes rise
over Lake Michigan.
Men and women grouped as Hossiers live
under an ethnic umbrella--thier genealogical backrounds as different as Gary and Mount
Vernon, as diverse as Tell City and Michigan City.
They live in quiet conclaves on the Ohio,
towns called Rome and Derby, urbanized metroplexes, on farms where houses are miles apart,
in new suburbs where yesterday's cornfield is tomorrow's housing addition.
Join the author on his 1,000 mile
leisurely journey around Borderline Indiana.
Backroads Indiana

Country Roads Take You
Home
Forsake the noise and bustle of cities and
interstates. Let author Wendell trogdon guide ou through "Backroads
Indiana." The author dedicated four season to exploring the diverse rural
landscape, "south of 40" (U.S. 40). What he discovered may surprise
you....encoutners with living history down along the Ohio River, at Oldenburg and
Canaan....in Owen County, rolling hills... in Jasonville, a "rock 'n roll"
mayor....in Freelandville, "America's best little farm town," a
novelist-turned-restaurateur...in Surprise and Punkin Center, two inspiring, durable
women. Despite change like school consolidation and uncertain farm prices, the
Hoosier character remains indomitable, living and breathing in the cafes, churches, and
stores that serve as community gathering places.
