Tie Games
Wolcott-Camden
December 12, 1958
This was perhaps the last tie high school
basketball game played in the state. Here is the report from the IHSAA yearbook.
A game of basketball was played by Camden and
Wolcott at Camden, December 12, 1958. Near the end of the game the score was tied at
50-50. A Camden player attempted an unsuccessful shot from the floor. After
the ball left his hands he was fouled (not flagrant) by a Wolcott player. During
this time the buzzer sounded, ending the game. Due to the noise, the buzzer was not
heard by the officials. A common agreement was not reached as to just when the game
ended. The referee administered the one and one penalty and both shots were
successful, making the score, 52-50. Wolcott protested the score to the IHSAA.
Since that time written statements were
filed by the timer in which they agreed that the ball had not left the Camden player's
hands before the buzzer ended the game.
Decision-After carefully reviewing all evidence
on file, the Board of Control unanimously ruled that the two points made after the game
ended should not be counted and the the contest should be considered a tie.
