The New Richmond Cardinals won
the 1934 Crawfordsville Sectional by defeating Darlington in the title game by a score of
35 to 24. They became ONLY the second school to win the Crawfordsville Sectional other
than Crawfordsville or Wingate. The sectional was played in Crawfordsville at Wabash
College. New Richmond defeated Linden 23 to 19 and New Market 28 to 20 to reach the title
game.
New Richmond entered the sectional with a record of 13 and
5. They had entered the 33 sectional with 14 wins and reached the title game before they
lost to Crawfordsville. The 33 and 34 seasons were two of New Richmonds best ever. The New
Richmond coach was Lester Olin. 1934 was his 5th season and he coached two more after
that.
They also had good teams in 1914 when they were a member of the
final sixteen. They lost to Lebanon who lost to Wingate who won the 1914 title. They also
had a good team in 1915 when they lost the title game to Crawfordsville in the first
Crawfordsville Sectional. In 1920 they also had
a good team. They were sent to the Lafayette Sectional in1920 where they won two games
before they lost to Jeff of Lafayette who won their own sectional.
New Richmond had won the Montgomery County Tourney in 1933 but
were defeated by Darlington in 1934. The 34 sectional was a wide open tourney as New
Market, Wingate, Waveland and Darlington as well as New Richmond all had good records.
Crawfordsville had a very poor year in 1934 as they entered the sectional with a 4 and 14
record. Crawfordsville did defeat Wingate but lost to Waynetown who didn't have as good of
a record as what Wingate had. New Richmond advanced to the Greencastle Regional where they
lost in their first game to Green-
castle by a 28 to 25 score. Nearly all of their regular season games were close as they
won ONLY two games by more than SIX points.
It is believed that New Richmond started playing basketball in
1910 and their last season was 1953. After this season they were consolidated with Wingate
to form Coal Creek. It is believed that the New Richmond starters in 1934 were Church and
Chadwick at forward, Ferry center,
Jones and Montgomery guards. The subs were Chrisman, Binns, Simmons and Mennen. I never
found any first names. As far as I have been able to find they had NO one star.
