Keeping Score
Since the inception of the game, score
keeping and time keeping have been kept in a variety of ways.
In the beginning, the score was kept on a
chalkboard, and a timer kept time with a stopwatch.

The earliest scoreboards were home made
or made in the school's shop class.

The numbers on the top of this scoreboard
represent the minutes left in the half. As the time ran down from 15 to 10 to 8 minutes
the light above the number would flash on. 15 minutes halves were the norm for games in
the early years.

This scoreboard was found under the
bleachers in the old Roll gym.

A clock was added to later scoreboards,
althought the score still had to be changed manually.
This type of scoreboard graced most gyms
by the 1940s and 1950s. The face would glow red during the last 60 seconds.

Modern scoreboards came on the scene in
the late 1950s and early 1960s. This scoreboard still hangs in the old Roll gym in
Blackford County. |
